It is often possible to treat minor injuries and illness at home, without the need to see a Doctor or nurse. The following is guidance on what you can do to treat yourself (or someone else). If symptoms continue and are persistent, it is advisable to contact your Doctor's surgery for advice. 01480 483100. Click here to make an appointment.
Apply plenty of cold water to the burnt area as soon as possible and continue until the pain eases. Apply a loose dry dressing if the skin is unbroken or blistered. If the burn is larger than about 4 inches in diameter or if the skin is broken consult your Doctor.
Colds Colds are caused by a virus and are not helped by antibiotics. The symptoms can be eased by taking aspirin (not for children under 16) or Paracetamol.
The most important treatment for earache is pain relief and Paracetamol should be given. If symptoms persist please make an appointment to see the Doctor.
High Temperatures High temperatures occur with infections. In children it is important to stop the temperature rising too quickly. This can be done with Paracetamol syrup, eg Calpol or Disprol which can be bought from the chemist. Gently sponging the body with tepid water and wearing a minimum amount of clothing will help. If the temperature does not come down or if you are worried then please call the surgery and an appointment will be made for the child to be examined.
Sore throats are usually caused by viruses. Adults and children over 16 will find gargling with soluble aspirin helpful. Children under 16 should be given Paracetamol syrup. If a sore throat persists for more than 4 to 5 days or if the patient is generally unwell then please consult the Doctor.
